So for the past week I've started on my chainmail haulbert. I have a nice section complete, and tomorrow I plan to start on the neck area. Going for a V shape. Not deep, but enough to be comfortable. ;D I plan to continue making rowes, but removing 1 set of 4, then 2 sets of the 4, and so on up. I'm not exactly sure how far, but actually working it out as I go. Anyone have any suggestions for how to accomplish this? It would be really appericated.

I'm making a hauberk as well and what I'm going to do is make pieces that are a row or two wider than the current tunic pattern I have (with a little adjustment) and then piece them together like that.

I'll ask Yngvin to check this out, he's been getting really involved with chainmailing.

Please let me know if there is an easier way to make the neckline. It keeps getting off on me. It's slightly annoying. I think that's my biggest pet-pev with chainmail. You get off, don't realize it, and then get to the end and are like, "damage, and double damage!" **unlink, unlink, unlink, unlink.**

When I made mine, I just made long chains - about the length of the shirt that I wanted from shoulder to "hem." When I had many of the chains, then I started linking them together to make the front. When I got to the area that I wanted the neck-line, I shorted the chain by a few links. Made a couple more chains that size and attached them, then shorted it a couple more again. Once I was in about the center of the chest, I started lengthening them again.
When the front was done, I started on the back section. Same thing when I got to the neck, shorted a couple links. Instead of making more of a V, I just went straight across the back of the neck, then back up full length. You can later add or remove links to get your head to fit through.
With the back and front complete, then I attached the shoulders and the sides. Make sure to leave arm holes.
For the arms, I attached each long chain as I made it (or piece together a few long chains at a time, then attach to the shirt). After doing the top half of the arms with full-length chains, I made a shorter length chain (about half length or so) and attached it. Then a full length chain and attached it on down. When you get to the end of the short chain, keep on attaching it to the other full length chain. This helps to create a taper in the arms.

Okay, that makes sense, and sounds easier then how I'm trying to get it.

The easiest way to fix the need to repair armpits, and I've heard this from MANY MANY MANY people, don't put them in. Leave your armpits open. If you used a tunic design to make it, the squares for the armpits, just remove them. It's still period (I think) but will save you a long run of headach. Unless you get hit there alot, but I'm going to assume you're bada$$ enough to keep unwanted swords out of your pits. xD That's the easiest way I know to fix it, unless you replace those links with riveted links. They don't tangle nearly as badly, and are not going to open up and fall out while you're fighting.

back when I used butted maille I would sauter each link as I added to the repair. That way it wont come undone for a long time
